I remember a trick with xbox 360 where you opened up the shell and placed pennies inside then put it back together throw towels over top of the xbox and let it overheat i believe for 25 minutes and viola, it actually fixed my rrod back in the day.  Id go with the cheapest xbox you can get since new consoles will come soon anyways.  Good luck with it.
