Behind the scenes the entire game is a bunch of HTTP API calls (think, "phone home") to servers who record what just happened and respond with what next, so it's just catching up after a score. I haven't and don't care enough to hook it up to a network sniffer like Charles or Fiddler but you could probably see a big burst of network activity after a TD. So my unedumacated guess, it's waiting and playing an animation instead of an NTO.
