I never bother with and instead cycle between normal and wide sets, but it might be another adjustment to make considering how good running is this year. 

 It affects gap responsibilities. For example the 3 technique is a B gap defender. He will either line up in the weak side B gap(under) or the strong side B gap (over). So lets say your opponent is running plays to the weak-side B gap. You can get into under front and put your star DT there to shut down that run play. The same thing if they are running to the strong side B gap. The 3-4 is a little different. I don't think that lineman flip like in the 4-3. I think they just shift weak and strong. I've never been a big 3-4 guy.
