If you're running a theme team it's best to only put a bunch of training into the cards you plan on keeping for the long haul. I did however invest quite a bit of training into getting Bo's power up to 88 but that seems to be paying for itself because of the added success I've had with him in PVP and quickly finishing solo challenges on harder difficulties.
