Its pretty obvious why. The NFL Draft is all about potential. It's why instead of saying "Trevor Lawrence is the best QB here", analysts would say "Trevor Lawrence is the best QB prospect here".

Sauce Gardner was taken 4th overall, when his teammate (Coby Bryant) that literally won best CB in college was taken in the 4th round.

It isn't necessarily about who plays the best in college, its who teams are the most interested in as a prospect to develop into an NFL star.

The combine is a great opportunity to look at the physical potential these guys have, and the media doesn't get to do the in depth interviewing and testing that NFL teams do with the players so it only makes sense that combine performances are gonna gas a player up in the media.

For the record, there's been other times where the media has gassed up a dude athletically, and he's been great (D.K Metcalf).

Again, its all about potential and physicality is a huge aspect for a lot of people (and some teams it plays a huge factor in, see: Henry Ruggs, John Ross)
