My hot sports opinion is that there are a few realities here.
1) people that spend money because madden = life. They aren’t in a relationship, they don’t have kids, this is what they choose to spend their money on, but they are pretty good at the game and compete at an elite level with an elite team.
2) people that spend money because they have so much of it or have such horrible spending habits they do it for immediate gratification. This is the guy that throws the deep ball to his recently purchased top-tier WR every time hoping that +3 speed advantage gives him an edge. He beats most average players and some good players with this strategy but constantly has to update his team to keep his edge. This is the same guy that buys the newest Vick or Lamar and exploits a speed advantage with no real understanding of how football is played. I think this is the guy most people hate.
3) the player that spends money from time to time because madden is a hobby and just like photography, fishing, or playing guitar, there is a cost associated with progressing in a hobby.
4) NMS - legit player that is against spending money based on principles, maybe they grew up gaming in the 90s and 2000s where games cost what they cost and that’s it. Pretty good at the game, can play with #3 above, likely has friends that are #1, but refuses to play with anyone that’s a #2.
5) NMS - annoying player that thinks he’s better than everyone with his 81 overall team in October because he’s NMS and everyone else pays to win. No matter who he loses to #1 - #4 the only reason for the loss is money spent and he’s the best in the world on regs.
