improving defense

Im god awful at this game, offense is something i can always improve in, but i somehow only managed to figure this out, but playing defense is really really hard in my opinion. Can anyone guide me to a beginner/medium defensive tutorial? I can only find like either cheese schemes or really like a lot of button pushing schemes. Learning to read defense etc is already in the game, but learning how to make my own scheme.

I run a 4-3 currently. Im trying the Panthers d book.

Quote from JNO323 >> Also prob good to construct your lineup around your style of play. Lets say you have Lawrence Taylor, but you play a lot of 43 cover 4, and you have him out there in zone coverage with a 40 zone coverage rating. He's going to be really bad for you. Derrick Brooks with an 82 ZCV rating will make more plays for you using him that way.

yeah i actually somehow really like the cover 4 and 3 hehe. I use the Demario Davis Theme builder and Tj Watt, i know they arent the best coverage linebackers but probably some of the better NAT cards. but mostly its 88 Shazier and 89 Smith who are playing in zone because of the linebacker specialist.

It should show it on the bottom right after they pick a play. If it says they have 1 TE & 3 WR you could stay in 34 or 43, but its probably better to put something that has 3 CBs on the field to match up with their 3 WRs.

Quote from JNO323 >> First thing would be to match personnel. If they come out in i form, strong, etc, 4-3 is good, but if they're coming out in shotgun you should switch over to to dollar 326, nickel normal etc. You don't want your linebacker lining up against a WR, he's gonna get torched.

Or if you change books, big dime 236 & big dime 146 are my main coverages . I run Dolphins Defense right now and mix those two in with nickel normal & nickel 335 odd for passing. & on formations with 2+ TEs, i go with 43 over, & 34 odd.

Second thing is take away their first read, and recognize tendencies. Most people panic after their first read is gone and will do something dumb. If your opponent is on a 3rd & 8 & he hits you with a corner route out of gun doubles formation. Next time you're in a similar situation, and you see it tell you he is coming out in gun doubles, he's probably going to try that again... So adjust your coverage to stop that, and he will likely be lost.
