So something that has frustrated me for a while is Terence Newman's flashback card. I don't care about him as a player so I'm not complaining that EA treated him unfairly or anything like that, but his OVR is calculated so strangely. I don't understand why, but I still see him regularly in h2h, and burn him with my max speed wrs (yeah hate me for throwing streak routes all you want, but I don't do it against good cbs).
So it led me to look him up in the database to see how he manages to be 114 ovr. I looked at the only two other 114 cbs (Hero Howard and Tournament Norman) and found some really interesting things (Here, take a look for yourself). First of all, I found that Josh Norman sucks, despite having the highest true OVR. I mean really, really, not a good card. Second, Howard is killing it on general stats compared to the others (excepting AWR). So the I looked at defensive stats to see if maybe Newman had amazing coverage. And sure, his PLR is more than decent. As is his MAN. However, his ZON is only okay and Howard still seems to be considerably better.

Quote from rlees >> stats have different weights and each position weighs stats differently. There is a chart somewhere but cannot honestly remember where I saw it. AWR is pretty key. EA normally offsets players by keeping AWR low to boost other stats. What they did with Howard.
Yeah pretty much this. They'll even inflate/deflate meaningless stats (IMB or THA on a defensive player, for instance) to compensate as well. Certain positions weight certain stats way more. Hence why some guys that seem average, like the three you mention, pretty high.
I think players definitely play beyond their stats. I will always target Newman and Sherman, and be wary with Ward, Blount, NTL, and Brown.
some formula discussion
