You have to work on your stick skills, bobbing and weaving is the way to go. I tried trucking at first then I learn it makes more sense to be an agility back(I have TOTW Fournette) than a bull rusher.
I've only used it for the achievements and went 5/8. Close HB wheel and hb counter are decent, just don't spam them and use Hudson instead of Zeke. Pretty easy, just time consuming, doesn't help matchmaking is poor either.
What I do experience as smashmouth, quite frequently some with even half my power has an unstoppable defense team that stops the majority of plays before the line of scrimmage even. Should take screenshots sometimes, I'm talking three to four defense player "sacking" my HB before he even ran a yard. I would accept this at some godly defense team with 89's and whatnot but it really happens randomly.
Not sure how others are going, but this Overdrive season it seems quite though. I hardly win 50% of my matches currently due to the above often popping up. And that match-making, it still frustrated me. So at one point I'm actually went from rank 6000 to 35000 (I know it's not my day), and got demoted back to bronze, next match I'm matched with the current rank 105. WTF.
I am 100% in on SM. I have 10 out of 11 players; once I can get an elite SM QB, it'll be 11/11. I have Tyrod Taylor as QB and his passing is just as accurate as his VT college career :) so I run the ball almost exclusively. The system is feast or famine. I did finish in an elite II tier over the past 2 weeks.

^^^^^^^^^^ I use the vertical because it has a lot of plays with routs I like. I still run a good amount but I'm definitely 60-40 pass heavy. I'm struggling with a SM Captain and it's that I loaded my lineup with vertical players and learned where the plays physically are in the playbook. Whenever you change any scheme all the formations and plays within the formations are moved around, so it's a huge disadvantage.
I feel like out of all the options, smash mouth is the most random with the highest range of possible outcomes. With spread and west coast and vertical there are spammable plays that can get you a consistent 1200-1500, with Smash Mouth I can use the same strategy on the same power guys and range from under 500 to 1700. Which is a little ironic because running is supposed to have the least variance IRL at least compared to passing.
And no, HB Counter is not spammable, I don't care if you win one or two games, if you spam HB Counter with smash mouth you are going to lose a lot more games than win.

you are making me think about switching my team. The one downside is I've already built my entire offense for a different scheme and now would have to start all over again. That's potentially the biggest downside to having different schemes - not real easy to switch offenses.

It would be a more helpful conversation if people explained themselves, and we could learn something from each other. For example: I don’t use smashmouth or spread much, because the passing plays are less traditional than what I’m used to, and I’m not finding reliable routes to my TEs and WRs, whereas the run plays available in West Coast offense seem just as effective when I need to run.

I rode smashmouth to a top 1000 ranking for this Overdrive season. Works pretty well for me, you just have to have a good running back, good blocking support players, and stay A LITTLE balanced.

Good point. I usually run spread captain with Nagy as coach for the running bonus. So maybe it is hard for me going to smashmouth, maybe its just my team but there don't seem to be many "big plays." Most of the passing plays don't seem to go for very much even when you connect (my 77 Alex Smith likes to overthrow a bit, I know I need an upgrade but times is tough in the bank virtual bank haha). Also, I broke maybe 5 total long runs with this. Again, maybe my team blocking stinks but I just think the plays seem to be geared more towards "short yardage" which obviously isn't good for this type of mode.
Not necessarily one best option. just depends on which plays you use/spam.
I run Hudson with Shanahan, I think thats best of both worlds. Some teams you just can't run against, thats were Shanahan comes in. You bomb it deep until you get a rushing tactic, you still can hit your bonus easily. I'm not a Nagy kinda guy, I don't rely on the run. It's just an added bonus of my play style.

If any of you are winning games with this offense, hats off. You would probably dominate if you switched to a different offense.
