A Little Perspective on MM Via NBA2K

I finished my team a couple of weeks ago and as there is nothing to really do on MM, I have taken some time to play another sports-simulation game, specifically NBA2K. It has afforded me a bit of perspective on MM, a game that I know I have complained about a great deal (not always without reason but still). Obviously, 2K is not a football game, but sports is sports, 2K is supposedly coming out with a football game in the future, and it gives a good idea what another high-level company's sporting game looks like. So, a quick comparison:

  • Stuff to do: Advantage MM and it's not close. I'd go over the details, but really, you have only five options in 2K, and one of them is quite boring while another one can only be played twice in a 24-hour span.
  • FTP-friendly: Advantage MM and it's not close. If you want to get to a higher level in 2K you've got to pay. I know some will say the same goes for MM, but that's not accurate. As there is no AH in 2K, there is no real way to get ahead no matter how hard you grind.
  • Competitive Modes: Advantage MM. It burns me to write this because I think this is an area where MM is lacking, but 2K is really lacking. In 2K you've got your H2H and you've got these "crews" which are sort of like a league, but it's not a great mode. It might be better if I were heavily invested in the game and in a better crew, but it's still limited.
  • Gameplay: Even. Both leave a lot to be desired. Just as MM has high-ranked receivers who let the ball bounce off their helmet, 2K has centers who consistently can't make a wide-open layup.
  • Animations: Advantage 2K and it's not even close. No teleporting PGs, no players falling all over each other. All animations are crisp and realistic.
  • Graphics: Advantage 2K and it's not even close. Football's uniforms and helmets have to be taken into consideration, but MM players look like zombies in three shades (Lamar black, Mahomes light-skinned, Kittle white). Meanwhile, 2K has players that look like the players down to their skin color, hair and tattoos. This element of the game is pretty impressive.
  • Simplicity of sets: Slight advantage 2K
  • Ease of Overall Game Setup: the advantage is theoretically 2K, but you have to remember that MM has a ton more to do. If 2K had anywhere near the same amount to do, I think MM would take the advantage
  • Interactivity: Push, I think both need to work on this. I also play online Yahtzee here and there and there is far more opportunity to interact with other players within the app (in online Yahtzee of all places). In MM you have what you have with your leagues and in 2K, you've got crews.
  • NTOs and connection: I actually take MM in this one. Probably the same connection with both games but when 2K crashes, you lose the game in H2H and in events, you lose your stamina and have to start over. In MM, in events, it starts wherever the game was when it crashed.
  • Card Art: not really something I care that much about, but 2K wins this.

TL;DR: Overall, MM is a much better, more engaging game. 2K looks better (graphics, animations, art). But I'll take more engaging over appearances. True I like football better, but I don't think that's the difference. So next time I complain--which, again, is sometimes warranted--I'll take this into consideration.

How good is the baseball one?

Haven't played it. Baseball, however, unlike basketball and esp football, has tons of options. Basketball has two main options--2K and Live (which is EA)-- and football, as we know, it's Madden or death.

Surprised there aren't any top hockey games. NHL '94 was one of my fave video games of all time and my definitive fave sports video game of all time--probably most who are my age would agree with me.

I think Hockey has a smalller fanbase

Nice review.

2K Mobile has the makings of being a great game, but agreed with a lot of what you said. Unless you're spending huge money, you're never getting the top cards. I have 4 pink diamonds, on season 38, and it's taken me foreverrrr to do that. They're super stingy with coins and constantly reward you pointless items that haven't been relevant since launch. NO AH, impossible sets, etc. all suck. That said, with a few tweaks IMO they could become the superior game. But, doubtful that ever happens and weirdly enough, EA is much more friendly to users overall.

Nice review. I tried out 2k last year. I was not impressed at all. People complain about Madden Mobile but we get a ton of content and Mobile is relatively F2P friendly.

I'd take 2K any day and it's not even close (assuming you mean 2K console and not NBA 2K Mobile)

I'd take MM over NBA 2K Mobile but not console

Console has always been better. I remember a few years someone talked about how all major companies who do sport games put tons of $ in console games and not much in mobile games.

How about madden console vs 2k console?

alnamiasiv

This is a MM board. I don't mean console.

Well written and a fair comparison
