IDK what this guy did to SO MANY PEOPLE, but I swear to God I have never seen a guy take so much flack for no reason. I'm going to summarize the nonsense below.
He's not a game changer, he's a game manager. He's a dink and dunk guy.
Okay. To call him a game manager or dink and dunk isn't just wrong, it's the actual opposite of the truth.
Brock Purdy set the NFL record (tracked since 2000) with a 63.8% Completion % on passes that travelled more than 20 yards in the air. That isn't top 50 all time. Not top 20 or 10 all time. That is #1 in the history of the NFL, assuming nobody came close to those numbers pre-2000, when a 63.8% was pretty damn good overall, not just on deep balls.
Brock Purdy also set the record for YPA with 400+ pass attempts in a season with 9.6. Once again, that's not just the best THIS YEAR, or "one of the best" it was THE BEST EVER FOR A QB WHO THREW THE BALL AT LEAST 400 TIMES IN A SEASON.
If you don't factor in QB's who didn't throw the ball at least 400 times, it's still 8th best all time.
He lead the league this year in passing attempts that travelled in the air 20+ (72) 30+ (31) and 40+ yards (14). So not only is he completing these passes at the highest rate ever, he is attempting them at the highest rate among all QB's this season.
He is a product of his system, look at how bad Jimmy Garoppolo was this season with The Raiders.
Okay. Yes, Jimmy Garoppolo had a fine season 4 years ago in Shanahan's system. He also played well last year before getting injured. The offense also averaged 5 FEWER POINTS PER GAME with Jimmy in 2022 than it did with Purdy.
Also. Why are all the same people who claim that Deebo isn't a real WR now using him as a reason Purdy has been so great? Neither Deebo or Aiyuk were even voted to the damn pro-bowl, but they're responsible for him having one of the most impressive statistical starts to a career in NFL history? So they're having their cake and eating it too?
Okay, that's fair. So I want the naysayers to tell me this. Who is the QB who had great individual and team success without a great supporting cast?
Peyton Manning had Dungy and Moore as coaches, had very good O-Lines, Edgerrin James, Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison.
Kurt Warner had Vermeil and Martz, Orlando Pace, Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce.
I could keep going, but we all know that basically every great QB who had great success had great teammates and/or great coaches.
Also, Jimmy Garoppolo was coming off his THIRD SEASON ENDING INJURY, on the wrong side of 30, going to a new team and system, playing for one of the most dysfunctional organizations of this century, with a toxic coach who was fired mid-season because he is a terrible head coach who was apparently hated by his players.
Brock Purdy lead the NFL in:
Passer Rating

YPA
YPC
TD%
Comp% on 20+ air yard throws
20+, 30+ and 40+ air yard attempts
He was 3rd in Passing TD's and 5th in Passing Yards despite not playing week 18 because 49ers clinched 1 seed.
He was 4th in Completion%
He had 5 games with over 300 passing yards
He had 3 games with 4 Passing TD's
10 games with a Passer Rating of 110+
He had 33 Total TD's to 13 Total turnovers (Lamar Jackson had 29 Total TD's to the same 13 Total Turnovers).
He should've been the MVP, and had he been drafted in the 1st round, he would've been.
Everyone was BEGGING for a reason for him to not win MVP, and it came at the expense of the best defense in The NFL, with 1 terrible mistake and a lot of really bad luck. It wasn't because of what anyone else in the MVP race did, it was because of what a great Defense did against him on 1 primetime game in week 16. So apparently The NFL MVP should be a week 16 award and not take into account the entire body of work? It's freaking stupid.
Then he went on to do the one thing everyone said he needed to do, he overcame average/poor play early and lead comebacks and game winning drives by making big plays with his arm and his feet. Guess what? That still wasn't enough. Because it is never going to be enough.
To cap it off, in The Super Bowl, Brock Purdy lead The 49ers to not 1, not 2, but 3 potential game winning drives IN A ROW! A Touchdown drive in the 4th Quarter to take the lead by 4 (wait XP was missed so it's just 3 now) KC ties it, Purdy leads team back down field to kick go ahead FG with less than 2 minutes remaining. KC ties it again. Shanahan wins toss and takes ball first because he's the worst big game decision maker in the NFL. Purdy leads team down to TAKE A LEAD.... IN THE SUPER BOWL.... IN OVERTIME.... AGAINST A DYNASTY WHO HAS ARGUABLY THE BEST SECONDARY IN THE NFL, AND A QB MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING IS THE MICHAEL JORDAN OF HIS SPORT/ERA. CMC fumbled away points on the opening drive, Trent had a couple early penalties that took points off the board and killed a drive. Kittle didn't do shit. Deebo was meh, Shanahan was typical big game Shanahan when it came to play calling, Aiyuk didn't do much, and slowed way down early in the game in what would've been a wide open TD, yet it's MR. IRRELEVANT BROCK PURDY who people want to blame. HE WAS THE ONE who had SO MUCH TO LOSE, by losing to a guy many would argue is already #2 on the all-time QB list.
How can this be so? How can so many people be this wrong about somebody? Purdy has been WAY better than guys like Trevor Lawrence, but he still gets top 10 treatment because of what he did at the collegiate level. Well, Joe Burrow was an absolute NOBODY until his final year at LSU when he had freaking JAMAR CHASE AND JUSTIN JEFFERSON among a host of others to throw to. Burrow is great, but before that year nobody knew who the hell he was. So are you telling me that because Burrow put up elite numbers in College, while Purdy has done it in The NFL, that is the difference between how you are perceived? If you come out of nowhere to have multiple elite performances in college it's more indicative of how good you are in The NFL than having elite performances in the actual NFL?
I'm not saying Purdy is better than Burrow, I'm just saying he is at worst a top 10 QB, and should be perceived that way. Personally I think he should be in the top 5-10 range, with the ability to crack the top 3ish conversation if he can have yet another season like he did in 2023. However, despite everything I outlined above, so many people still have him as an average, or below average QB, and it makes ABSOLUTELY.... NO.... F'ING.... SENSE....
Thank you for letting me rant, if you actually ready all that.
