Look at the names that are visible. Usually there are two names - the player that you are controlling and the 'active pass receiver'.

How in the hell do you keep your players from passing cross court to a random teammate when there is a guy wide open under the basket???
it seems every time the pass button is hit the player holding the ball whips it across the court....
