Elo is used in other modes (regular teams h2h, draft, salary cap, etc). There's in game clues (the message you get when you're up 21-0 on someone). How wild the matchmaking is if you let it extend passed the first 30 seconds. Personal experience (the fact that I've played against people I know I'm not in the same division and my matches don't get easier if I try to self demote.). Go play modes where there is no elo, say for instance weekend league qualifiers.

I know, that's what I've been doing, too. The thing I do to make the set even cheaper is instead of buying harvest players at 2k, I build them for 1.2k each by buying cheap golds.

Matchmaking goes by ELO, not by the tier you're in

It's because the set to get the power up costs 468k to complete.
