The video game license is a drop in the bucket compared to the TV deals which is where the real money is. It's more about be able to maintain brand consistency and deal with a single entity vs. chasing cats across multiple vendors. It's the same reason all of the sports card licensing across all of the leagues are shifting to a monopoly at Fanatics.

Also when the guys chasing the new cards get them you will have a glut of the proir top guys for sale cheap as you wont have then tied up in powerups as long term investments.
